Certification of Maintenance Planners

The Problem

Following the impact of COVID-19, and influence of other factors, this mining company disbanded their Planning team. This resulted in the loss of experienced planners, vast amounts of tribal knowledge, and dip in process performance, reduced job plan quality and standardization.

The Solution

Over the last four years the company has begun rebuilding their planning team and capability. Their first step was to fill open planning roles, followed by aligning and educating their planners, and key support staff, on planner responsibilities, planning process steps, and company standards etc.

Our client felt strongly that their 10 planners would benefit most from a learning experience which raised both their planner’s knowledge and competence. This was the path that would lead to improved job performance. The chosen solution to meet these objectives was Marshall Institute’s Certified Maintenance Planner (MI-CMP) pathway.

Our certification for maintenance planners is a multi-week process which includes education, followed by real world application and supported by a coach. The pathway towards certification wraps up with two exams, first one assessing their performance competency and the second one assessing their knowledge gained.  Certification proves attainment of both role knowledge and performance to the required criteria. for successful performance as a maintenance planner.

With much dedication on their side, we helped them to successfully develop 10 of our client’s Planners through the MI-CMP pathway. 7 planners participated in a private wave, and 3 participated in a public wave.

The Outcome

Our client stated that the certification met their objectives of increased maintenance planner knowledge and performance. The planners grew their knowledge of their roles and the planning process, which has allowed them to boost their ability to plan efficient jobs.

In addition to the explicit goals, our client also recognized additional benefits of the certification; included:

Team Strength

Their planning team built stronger relationships and group cohesion.

Communication

They are now able to communicate and contribute to important workflow process improvements.

Role Identification

Planners are better protecting their time and schedule as they know what is core to their role, and what’s not.

Standardization

The company is better prepared for future planner staff changes as they have better clarification of the planner tasks and company standards, and now have the MI-CMP as a standard development pathway.

Preparation

Our client is preparing to upgrade their CMMS system. Their capable planners can help ensure that the work management process is configured appropriately to their company standard.

Conclusion

These benefits have been achieved shortly after the conclusion of the certification. Although we cannot predict the future, we are confident that the longer this team remains united on the core focus of the planning team, the more they adhere to core planner responsibilities, the more they protect job plan standards, and the more they continuously improve their abilities and work management process, the more benefits they will receive and successes they will achieve.
